Service was a curatorial project initiated by Lesia Kulchynska that invited artists to transform elements of their artistic practice into unconventional services offered to the public. The project challenged the conventional relationship between artistic practice and paid labour by treating service itself as an artistic medium — something authored, performative and not fully adaptable to customer demand. The project later continued in international iterations, including Service at Dappermarkt in Amsterdam.
For the project, I developed Art Divination, a participatory format combining Tarot and conversation. Participants shared a personal situation, after which I selected one of the Major Arcana as a symbolic response to their story. The card was not used primarily to predict the future, but as an archetypal image through which an experience could be reframed and considered from another perspective.
In some encounters, the process concluded with an Instax portrait of the participant together with their card. The photograph functioned simultaneously as documentation and as a material trace of the exchange.
By placing divination within the structure of a paid artistic service, the work deliberately occupied an ambiguous territory between ritual, interpersonal exchange, performance and commercial labour. Participants could purchase the encounter, yet what they received was not a standardized product shaped entirely by customer demand. Its method, structure and symbolic language remained part of my artistic practice.
